End of Life for Windows Server 2012/2012 R2

Microsoft announced in Q4 2022 that it will stop supporting Windows Server 2012/2012R2 as of October 10, 2023. There are still a majority of organisations using servers with the OS and it is therefore important to start planning, budgeting and strategising around the phasing out/upgrading of these servers.

What does this mean?

After October 10, 2023, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes or technical support on the products. When the date occurs, Microsoft will disclaim all responsibility for anything related to the system and you, the owner, will have to take care of the product yourself. Given this, the operating system becomes very vulnerable to cyber attacks. Continuing to use the operating system also means exposure to compliance issues.

What are my options?

Customers are advised to upgrade to Windows Server 2022 to continue operations without interruption. Eligible customers with Software Assurance under an Enterprise Agreement can also purchase an Extended Security Update (ESU) for Windows Server 2012/2012R2.

Microsoft also recommends customers move their applications and workloads to the Azure Cloud to become independent of an operating system.

If your organisation is upgrading server equipment or moving to the Cloud, this is something to consider in your planning, as it can influence the decision you make.

How do I take the next step?

Take advantage of the time until 10 October and plan your phase-out/move/upgrade. If you have questions or concerns, contact your sales representative to get answers to your questions and evaluate the details of your environment.
